SP1 was completed in February, only for Microsoft to discover problems with a number of third party device drivers. The company tweaked Windows Update to ensure that systems running these drivers do not install the Vista update.
Mike Haigh, Windows client marketing manager, said that the problem with such drivers is to be expected, since Vista has to support so many devices, but “the overall device driver story is a great one” with Vista supporting 80,000 devices.
Microsoft has also released the latest batch of extras for users who bought Vista’s Ultimate Edition: two new sound schemes and three resource-hungry animated desktops available from ultimatepc.com.
And for users still on XP, service pack 3 should arrive next week

Is SP3 designed to crash XP so that we all move over to Vista?
I’m using Vista, upgraded from XP. My advice, avoid Vista at all costs! It hoards too much memory, processor has to work 1/2 again as hard, and worst of all is the annoying pop ups constantly asking if you’re sure you want to do what you are attempting to do. Who ever came up with that idea needs to be fired with no severance.
How long have you been using vista Dave?
Vista’s AI should learn your choices reasonably quickly.
It’s fair to say that unlike other OS’s Vista was always earmarked at being ram thirsty and that Dual Core CPU’s were a basic requirement.
You can also switch off those annoying popups if they persist.
I run it on this Inspiron with 2gig of ram, my only grumble is that I should have made it a clean install not an upgrade from Xp Pro.
It’s by far the most stable OS i’ve ever run - but frankly i’ve had to learn the whole OS stuff again from scratch. It’s windows only by name - it is totally different in operation.
I’ll do a rebuild and clean install at some point - probably when Office gets too annoyed with running on the old Xp OS hiding away in dark recess of my HD.
